Rare Vintage Sports Memorabilia and Cards Shine at Robert Edward Auctions’ January Event

The January Encore Auction at Robert Edward Auctions is a dream come true for collectors of vintage sports cards and memorabilia. This extraordinary event features rare items dating back to the 19th century, allowing collectors to delve into the rich history of sports. With over 3,700 items spanning more than 180 years of sporting history, this auction offers something for every collector.

REA President Brian Dwyer expresses his pride in the impressive array of signed items and iconic cards featured in the auction. Collectors will be delighted to find signatures from legendary figures such as Lou Gehrig, Walter Johnson, and Honus Wagner. One of the highlights is an 1888 N403 Yum Yum Tobacco John Clarkson Throwing card, graded PSA EX 5, capturing the essence of the era.

The auction also presents a wide range of other remarkable items. For baseball enthusiasts, there is an 1842 receipt signed by baseball executive Alexander Cartwright, exemplifying the early days of the sport. Additionally, collectors can find a 1883 Harry Wright-signed scorecard from a game between Philadelphia and Wright’s Providence Grays, a 1938 Lou Gehrig-signed postcard, a 1924 Walter Johnson-signed album page, a 1939 Honus Wagner-signed Baseball Centennial First-Day Cover, and a Babe Ruth cut signature. It doesn’t end there, as there are also checks signed by baseball icons like Jackie Robinson, Ty Cobb, and Roberto Clemente.

The auction’s extensive collection of vintage cards is truly impressive. Some of the standout cards include a 1952 Topps #311 Mickey Mantle card, a 1914 E145 Cracker Jack Grover Alexander rookie card, a 1910-1911 M116 Sporting Life Honus Wagner card, several 1954 Topps #128 Hank Aaron rookie cards, and a 1957 Topps Football Johnny Unitas rookie card. These cards serve as both collectible treasures and as a reflection of the sporting history they represent.

For collectors specifically interested in vintage baseball cards, the auction offers hundreds of T206 cards. Among these are rare finds like the Ty Cobb Portrait Red Background card and cards with rare Carolina Brights backs. The significance and rarity of these cards make them highly sought after by collectors.

As the world of sports evolved, so did the cards. The auction also features modern card highlights, including a 1986 Topps Football Steve Young rookie card and early Michael Jordan cards from 1984 and 1985. These modern cards allow collectors to bridge the gap between past and present sporting legends.

The Robert Edward Auctions’ January event is a testament to the enduring appeal and value of vintage sports memorabilia and cards. It offers a unique opportunity for collectors to own a piece of sports history, whether it be a signed item from a legendary figure or a rare vintage card. With its diverse and historically rich collection, this auction showcases the passion and dedication of collectors and the importance of preserving the legacy of sports.
