Topps Launches Historic Negro Leagues Card Series

Topps, a household name in the world of sports trading cards, has embarked on a groundbreaking collaboration with artist and former MLB player Micah Johnson to pay tribute to the legendary athletes of the Negro Leagues. This partnership has given birth to the inaugural Topps Negro Leagues Baseball Card Set, a momentous project that has left Johnson beaming with pride.

Kicking off the series was the reveal of a remarkable Satchel Paige card in Kansas City, marking the commencement of the “Road to Rickwood” campaign. Leading up to the highly anticipated Rickwood Classic, a new card will be introduced each week, culminating in a special MLB game at Rickwood Field on June 20, 2024. These festivities not only honor the historical significance of the oldest professional ballpark in the U.S. but also pay homage to the former home of the renowned Birmingham Black Barons.

To amplify the celebration, towering 24-foot replicas of the illustrious cards will be showcased at various MLB ballparks across the nation, serving as a visual testament to the enduring legacy of the Negro Leagues and their inspiring players.

Micah Johnson, the talented artist behind this remarkable series, has seamlessly transitioned from his professional baseball career to a flourishing one in the art world. His intricate, hand-drawn portraits of the iconic Negro Leagues players seamlessly blend artistic finesse with historical reverence, capturing the essence and spirit of these baseball pioneers.

Aside from the base cards, collectors are in for a treat with the inclusion of limited edition Numbered Parallel Cards in each print run. Ranging from the Silver Border (/99) to the ultra-rare Gold Border (/1), these parallel cards add an element of exclusivity and allure to an already sought-after collection, intensifying the excitement for avid collectors as they chase after these prized possessions.

This groundbreaking card series is not just a commemoration of the rich history and enduring legacy of the Negro Leagues but also a rare opportunity for fans and collectors to own a piece of art that encapsulates the greatness of these baseball legends. With new card releases scheduled every Thursday leading up to June 20, enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting each unveiling, eager to add to their collection and immerse themselves in the legacy of these trailblazing athletes.
